After the usual early morning trip to the Lake I arrived at the gate eager as you like. I had witnessed both the Lakes biggest residents munching the TNT barrels last week so I knew they loved it!
But as I sat there in the dark waiting for the clock to reach 5.45am I had a bit of a change of heart. The wind was supposed to pick up that day and because of the enclosed nature of my target water new winds make little to no difference.
There is another Lake on the complex probably 2/3 times the size and because it is up high I suddenly started thinking that it was worth a go, the Lake in question is much easier as well where you would always be looking for at least one fish in a day. So in the time I lit a fag and waited for the clock to tick my plan was changed and my new one formulated!
The walk up there is a killer so I lightened the load a little bit and marched up there, once at the top my lungs were hanging from my nether regions, but before anyone arrived and it was still dark I thought it worth getting two bags out into the swim whilst I waited to see what I was doing. I decided on the first, deeper dam wall end of the Lake, I like deeper water this time of year and the wind was reported to howl down here as the day progressed. Almost instantly a greedy little double snaffled the TNT Barrel hook bait and after unhooking him in the net I let him slip off, at a guess in pretty shoddy light I would have said he was about 14lbs.
Anyway as the morning progressed a couple of anglers set up next to me so I started getting itchy feet, 2/3 of the lake was totally devoid of anglers and no one had had anything, so I reeled in, lit a fag and wandered down to the middle section of the Lake, as I stood there observing I felt the wind blowing into my face, “that’s not right I thought” but for sure it was turning and was now pushing down the other end! As quickly as a 6ft 2 20 stoner can, I legged it back down to the swim and hurriedly packed away, slung it over my shoulder and I was in the new swim within 15minutes. I decided on the middle section to try and intercept them as they travelled into the narrow section of the Lake. Two TNT barrels were flicked out wrapped in the matching paste about 15 and 30 yards out onto clear strips between the weed, the short one was on what appeared to be a patrol route into a reed bed. I then scattered 40/50 barrels and about a kg of broken 15millers around each rod, making sure they were well spread making the carp work for the treat!
After about 30minutes the right hand rod peeled off and shot from the clip, instantly I knew it was small so I bullied it through the weed and again netted him in the edge, probably about 17lbs. Again a kg of chops went out followed by the rig and again about 40 minutes later it yelped off, this time a slightly better fish, I hoisted him onto the mat and weighed him in a 24lbs. Happy as Larry for the runs I flicked it out again followed by some chops.
At this point I was considering putting both rods on the productive spot, but I was so sure something would use the channel the left hand rod was in that I left it there and put out probably another pound of chops. At about 4 O’clock the left hand rod slowly nodded, the bobbin inched up and then it held, as I put what was on my lap down I knew the script and then all hell broke loose as I made my way to the rods, the tip slammed round, the braid pulled from the clip and I lifted in to a solid weight, this feels better I thought so I gingerly lead it through the weed and without any hassle at all slipped a very long and quite chunky common into the net. I couldn’t believe it, I have only fished the Lake 5 times, blanking once, having a 30 on my 1st trip, then the blank, then 2 x20’s the 3rd time, 15 fish to 29lbs the 4th and then this 30 as well as the littlens I had already had, lady luck was on my side! Lol
Not a massive fish by today’s standards at all, but she has a history this old girl and is an original King Carp hatched in Donald Leeneys old ponds so means a lot to me!
Thanks to Individual Baits for the Steamies, it’s nice I know I can take this bait anywhere with total confidence, the rest is down to me!
